the benefits of slippery elm

Slippery Elm (Ulmus ruba), also known by many other names including Elm bark, American elm and Red elm is one of the most valuable medicines one can have in their herbal remedy cupboard.

It can help sooth irritation, draw out impurities, heal rapidly, disperse inflammation and is a great all round strengthening herb. As a soothing agent it is particularly effective in healing inflamed or irritated surfaces, chapped skin, wounds and burns. It is very beneficial externally for the treatment of inflamed lungs, stomach, intestines and urinary organs.

Slippery Elm is very beneficial for the elderly as it provides high nutritional qualities while being gentle on the body.

If you suffer from acid in the stomach, Slippery Elm may benefit in neutralising stomach acidity.

Slippery Elm is excellent in poultice form for healing inflamed or injured parts of the body and can strengthen tissues and helps to speed up recovery.

Slippery Elm may also be effective in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, scalding, boils, diarrhoea, tumours, vaginal irritation, sore throat, coughs, inflammation of the bowels and gastric ulcers (plus many more).

As Slippery Elm can be made as a decoction, infusion, powder, pessaries, suppositories, mucilage and tincture it is an important herb to keep in your medicinal chest.
